Santa Fe has been a capital for over four centuries, and the story is rarely smooth. The city was founded as the Spanish colonial capital around 1610, abandoned during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and retaken by Diego de Vargas in 1693. A guide whose family arrived in 1692 can speak about that last chapter with a personal connection few walking tours can offer.
The Plaza anchors the story. It was the end of the Camino Real from Mexico City, and later the terminus of the Santa Fe Trail, which brought American traders and, in 1846, the U.S. Army. The Palace of the Governors on its north side, begun around 1610, has housed Spanish, Pueblo, Mexican, Territorial and American governments in turn.
Because the walk is built around one expert's research rather than a script, it tends to go deeper on people and documents than on postcard views, which makes it well suited to travelers who have already seen the standard highlights.
