Away from the Plaza, Santa Fe's streets follow older patterns. Canyon Road and its neighbors were once farm lanes along the Camino Real, and the Santa Fe River's acequias watered small orchards and gardens. Many of the adobe homes you pass began as modest farmhouses and were enlarged over generations.
El Zaguan on Canyon Road shows how that growth worked. A farmhouse bought for $250 in 1854 became a mansion of about two dozen rooms, and it was later remodeled in the twentieth century revival spirit.
Much of what feels centuries old was shaped in the early 1900s, when city planners deliberately promoted a Pueblo and Spanish Colonial look, so a local guide can show which details are original and which were designed to be picturesque.
