The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened on July 17, 1997, eleven years after the artist's death, and is described as the first American art museum dedicated to a woman artist of international stature. O'Keeffe, who first visited New Mexico in 1929 and settled here permanently in 1949, spent decades painting the bleached bones, adobe walls and red hills around Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch.
Before the museum, the walk covers older layers. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was built under Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy between 1869 and 1886 in Romanesque Revival style from yellow limestone, a deliberate contrast with the adobe around it, and it stands on the site of an earlier adobe parish church.
San Miguel Mission, built between 1610 and 1628 and rebuilt in 1710 after the Pueblo Revolt, is often called the oldest church in the continental United States. De Vargas Street and the Palace of the Governors tie the route together.
