Canyon Road began as a residential lane of Indigenous, Spanish and Mexican farms, part of the old Camino Real. It became an art district in the early twentieth century, when artists and writers arrived, many of them drawn by the dry climate and high elevation, which doctors then recommended for tuberculosis patients. Today it holds more than 80 galleries, studios and restaurants in converted adobe homes.
El Zaguan at 545 Canyon Road began as a modest adobe farmhouse that merchant James L. Johnson bought in 1854 for $250. He and his wife expanded it into a mansion of about two dozen rooms with a library and private chapel, and Margretta Dietrich bought it in 1928 and had it remodeled. It later housed the Historic Santa Fe Foundation.
Because gallery inventories change constantly, a guide with an arts background is useful mainly for explaining what separates a serious regional painter from a souvenir print.
