Overview

A private guide leads you on foot through San Salvador's historic center: the National Theatre, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Iglesia El Rosario, the neoclassical National Palace, the craft market, and the National Library, learning the capital's history and culture at your own pace.

A private half-day loop through San Salvador's own historic center, at your own pace with a local guide. This is genuinely different ground from Voyzo's multi-day El Salvador routes, which pair only a brief capital stop with the San Salvador Volcano hike rather than a dedicated deep dive into the city's own colonial-era landmarks.

Highlights

  • National Theatre of San Salvador One of the oldest theatres in Central America, an architectural landmark that has hosted the capital's theatrical and musical life since the early 20th century.
  • Metropolitan Cathedral & Iglesia El Rosario See the neo-Gothic Metropolitan Cathedral on Plaza Barrios, then the strikingly different Iglesia El Rosario, a Brutalist parabolic-arch church whose walls are made almost entirely of rainbow-colored stained glass.
  • National Palace El Salvador's neoclassical former seat of government, completed in 1911, now open as a museum in the heart of the historic center.
  • Craft market & National Library Browse the historic center's craft market for local handicrafts, then see the Biblioteca Nacional, one of Central America's most modern national libraries.

The Teatro Nacional was begun in 1911 to a French Renaissance design by Daniel Beylard, with an interior by Italian architect Lucio Cappellaro, and was inaugurated on March 1, 1917. The National Palace, built between 1905 and 1911 by engineer José Emilio Alcaine, housed the government until 1974 and is now a national monument on Plaza Gerardo Barrios.

The Metropolitan Cathedral holds the crypt of Archbishop Óscar Romero, who was killed in 1980 and canonized in 2018; Pope John Paul II prayed at his tomb during visits in 1983 and 1996. Together these buildings make a compact walk through the capital's civic and religious history.
