San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye, was founded in 1848 or 1849 by refugees fleeing the Caste War in Yucatán. The island was much older as a stop on Maya trade routes, and the Bacalar Chico canal at its northern tip is believed to have been dug by the Maya more than 1,500 years ago to move goods without entering open sea.

The reef you snorkel belongs to the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, inscribed by UNESCO in 1996 and second in size only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Charter days let you move between sites as conditions allow instead of following a fixed group schedule.
