The Salar de Uyuni covers more than 10,000 square kilometres at about 3,656 metres and is the world's largest salt flat. It is estimated to hold around a quarter of the world's lithium resource, in the brine under the crust.
Laguna Colorada, in the Eduardo Avaroa reserve, is a shallow lake of about 54 square kilometres whose reddish colour comes from sediments and algae. It is the largest known nesting site of the rare James's flamingo, and Chilean and Andean flamingos also gather there.
The wet season, roughly December to April, can flood the salar into a mirror but may affect road conditions; the dry season gives easier driving. Bring your passport for the border crossing.
