Tulor is a settlement of clustered circular clay houses founded around 300 BC. It was occupied for centuries and later abandoned, reportedly after the nearby San Pedro River shifted course. Dates vary by source, with occupation commonly given as roughly 380 BC to 1200 AD.
Pukará de Quitor is a hilltop fortress dating to about the 12th century, built by the Atacameño people. Tradition says it was used to resist the Incas and later the Spanish, though scholars debate details of its use as an administrative centre and refuge.
Seeing both shows the long span of human life in this desert, from early farming villagers to fortified hilltop communities.
