El Tatio sits at about 4,320 metres and has more than 80 active geysers, making it the largest geyser field in the Southern Hemisphere and often ranked the third largest in the world.
The famous steam columns are best at sunrise because the extremely cold air condenses the steam; as the air warms, the plumes shrink and fade, which is why departures are in the dark before dawn.
