Piedras Rojas sits in the Aguas Calientes salt flat area and is known for its rust-red rock formations set against pale salt and the surrounding Andes. Nearby, the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons are sister lakes fed by snowmelt groundwater from Cerro Miscanti and the Miñiques volcano, at more than 4,000 metres, where foxes, flamingos and vicuñas are commonly seen.
Chaxa Lagoon, in the southern Salar de Atacama within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, is a shallow, very salty lagoon ringed by salt crusts. It supports tiny Artemia brine crustaceans that form the base of the flamingos' diet, and it is regarded as one of the few places where all three Andean flamingo species can reliably be seen together.
A day that climbs so far is best taken slowly; your guide can adjust stops and pacing for the altitude.
