Valle de la Luna lies about 13 kilometres west of San Pedro de Atacama inside the Cordillera de la Sal, a folded ridge roughly 180 kilometres long that rises about 200 metres above the salt flat. Its ridges are made of folded sediments and evaporites, and wind and water have carved the pale, moon-like shapes you walk among.
Geologists explain the range as the result of a former salt basin between the Domeyko mountains and the main Andes being squeezed over the last 10 to 15 million years. Sand blown in from neighbouring areas has also piled into dunes between the ridges.
Most visitors arrive together for sunset, so a private route and custom departure time is the practical way to enjoy the quiet of the valley.
