The Atacama is often described as the driest non-polar desert on Earth, and its scenery changes sharply with altitude: salt-crusted basins around 2,400 metres, folded salt ridges, and highland lagoons above 4,000 metres. Spending three days lets you see more than one of those layers instead of rushing a single circuit.
The Salar de Atacama, Chile's largest salt flat, is the lowest part of this system, with the Cordillera de la Sal on its western side and volcanoes including Licancabur on the eastern horizon. A private 4x4 makes the unpaved tracks between them practical and lets you stop wherever the light is good.
Because the route and hours are flexible, photographers can plan around sunrise and golden hour rather than a fixed group departure.
