The San Marco convent dates to 1436, when Cosimo de' Medici the Elder invited the Dominican order to take over an older Benedictine site and commissioned the architect Michelozzo to rebuild it. The friar Fra Angelico lived at San Marco from roughly 1438 to 1445, and it was here, working alongside pupils, that he frescoed the convent's monks' cells, corridors, and chapter rooms with the devotional scenes the museum is now best known for.
A few decades later the convent became the base of a much more turbulent figure: Girolamo Savonarola, who arrived in 1490 and rose to become prior in 1491. From San Marco he delivered fiery sermons against the corruption and luxury of Florence's elite, briefly helping to force the Medici from power and reshape the city's politics, before being arrested, tried as a heretic, and burned at the stake in Piazza della Signoria in 1498.
Because San Marco sits a little off the main tourist circuit compared to the Uffizi or the Duomo, it tends to stay genuinely quiet even in high season, which makes it easier to actually take in Fra Angelico's cell frescoes at close range rather than glimpsing them past a crowd.
