About This Tour

Visit both Xunantunich, reached by a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River, and Cahal Pech, a compact hilltop Maya site inside San Ignacio itself, with a private guide. Escapes the crowds and fixed bus schedules that build up at Xunantunich by traveling privately — your guide sets the pace at both sites rather than working around a shared group's departure time.

These two sites make a good pair because they belong to different chapters of Maya history. Cahal Pech sits on a hill above the confluence of the Macal and Mopan rivers and is one of the oldest recognizably Maya sites in western Belize, with evidence of settlement as far back as around 1200 BCE and abandonment around 850 AD. It is a compact cluster of roughly 34 structures around a central acropolis, long interpreted as the hilltop home of an elite family.

Xunantunich, on the other side of the Mopan River, was occupied later and lasted somewhat longer than Cahal Pech. Its main pyramid, El Castillo, rises about 40 meters above the plaza, making it one of the tallest buildings in Belize. A free hand-cranked cable ferry carries you and the vehicle across the river to reach it.

Seeing the smaller, older hilltop palace first and the grander pyramid after gives a sense of how Maya settlement here grew and changed.
