Tikal is far enough from San Ignacio that a private vehicle makes real sense: it is roughly 130 kilometers by road, around two to three hours depending on how smoothly the Belize-Guatemala border crossing goes. Tikal National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and it rewards the effort with temples that rise out of living rainforest.
Temple I, the Temple of the Great Jaguar, stands about 47 meters tall and was built around 732 AD as a funerary pyramid for the ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil, who was entombed in 734 AD. Temple II faces it across the Great Plaza at about 42 meters, and the Central Acropolis nearby housed the royal palace. Temple IV, at around 70 meters, is the tallest structure at Tikal.
Between the monuments the forest is part of the visit, with howler monkeys and toucans in the canopy. Bring your passport for the day, since this is an international border crossing.
