About This Tour
A full-day private tour covering Salvador's distinct geography — the calm waters of the Lower City along Todos os Santos Bay, the Itapagipe Peninsula, and the historic Upper City where the Historic Center sits. This is a private full-day tour for your group only, designed to show Salvador's full geography rather than just its best-known landmarks. Your guide explains why the city is split into two levels and how each neighborhood's history differs.
Salvador was laid out in the 1500s as a fortified two-level city: administrative and religious buildings on the high bluff, and the port and warehouses below by the bay. The split is still how locals describe the city, and the Elevador Lacerda, opened in 1873, remains the best-known link between the two levels.
The Itapagipe Peninsula sits on the calm northern side of Todos os Santos Bay, a very different landscape from the Atlantic-facing beaches and from the old center above. Visiting it explains how the bay shaped the city's trade, fishing and neighborhoods.
Back up in the Upper City, the Historic Centre was inscribed by UNESCO in 1985. Seeing the lower neighborhoods first makes the grandeur of the upper churches and squares easier to understand, since the two halves of the city were built to depend on each other.
