The church's foundation stone was laid in 1708, the building was finished around 1723, and the convent was completed in 1752. Decoration continued for decades, and the whole complex is usually described as finished around 1782 when the tilework and gatehouse were done.
The interior is known for carved woodwork covered in gold leaf, and the cloister is lined with Portuguese azulejo tiles. Tile panels signed in 1737 reproduce scenes from the life of St. Francis, and some sources say it holds more azulejos than any other church in Latin America, a claim we treat as popular rather than confirmed.
The church is part of the Pelourinho Historic Centre inscribed by UNESCO in 1985. Because the gilding is concentrated in a very small space, a guide helps you decode the saints, symbols and tile stories rather than just look at the shine.
