Samba-reggae grew out of Salvador's blocos afro, Afro-Brazilian Carnival groups that took shape in the 1970s and 1980s as a way of asserting pride in African heritage. Ilê Aiyê, founded in 1974 in the Liberdade neighborhood, is widely seen as the first bloco afro.
Olodum, founded in 1979 and based in Pelourinho, became the style's most famous ambassador, and the percussionist Neguinho do Samba is generally credited with shaping the samba-reggae sound by blending samba with reggae and Caribbean rhythms.
Its drum patterns connect to older traditions such as samba de roda and the rhythms of Candomblé ceremony. A hands-on class lets you feel how those layers fit together rather than just hear them at Carnival.
