About This Tour

A private walking tour through Pelourinho, Salvador's UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town, focused on the colonial architecture, cobblestone squares, and layered African and Portuguese history that cars can't reach. This walking tour is exclusively for your own group. Going on foot lets your guide take you into alleys and squares a vehicle tour would miss, with real time to look closely at the colonial facades and talk through the neighborhood's complicated history.

Pelourinho means pillory in Portuguese. As the first capital of Portuguese America, Salvador had pillories in several open squares, including Terreiro de Jesus, and the neighborhood's name carries that history of public punishment of enslaved Africans. It is worth hearing this plainly, because the pastel facades today can hide how recent and how raw the story is.

The Historic Centre was inscribed by UNESCO in 1985. What makes it distinctive is the mix of styles within a few hundred meters: Mannerist decoration in the cathedral, the Baroque of the Church and Convent of São Francisco, and the church of the Black brotherhood of the Rosary, all linked by steep cobbled lanes that a vehicle simply cannot enter.

Walking also shows you how the old town is still lived in. Afro-Brazilian cuisine, music and religion shape the neighborhood, and a local guide can point out the doorways, tiles and squares that most visitors pass without noticing.
