The Museu Náutico da Bahia occupies the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra. Its collection includes maps, navigation instruments, models of Portuguese and Spanish ships, and finds from the Galeão Sacramento, a Portuguese galleon that sank at the entrance to Todos os Santos Bay.

The fort began as a ten-sided tower in 1536 and was repeatedly enlarged; the lighthouse was installed in 1698 and is commonly called the first in Latin America. Its position at the mouth of the bay explains its role in guarding the port.

The museum also touches on the slave trade, which is inseparable from the history of the harbor it overlooks. The terrace views toward the Atlantic and across the bay are among the most photographed in Salvador.
