Projeto Tamar was officially founded in 1980 and chose Praia do Forte as its national headquarters because the beach is one of Brazil's most important sea turtle nesting sites. The project works with local coastal communities and is widely cited as a successful conservation model.
Praia do Forte also holds the Castelo Garcia d'Ávila (Casa da Torre), begun by Garcia d'Ávila in 1551 and built up over the following decades. It is often described as the only medieval-style castle in the Americas, a description that is promotional shorthand but reflects its fortress look.
The village of Praia do Forte grew around that early fortified estate and later became a fishing community and then a resort town. The Coconut Coast drive north from Salvador shows that transition from city to quiet coast in a single day.
