Santa Rosa de Tastil sits beside Tastil, an archaeological site built by the Atacameño people that thrived in the fifteenth century. It grew to perhaps 400 households and over 2,000 inhabitants before a siege by Inca troops. The houses were laid out without mortar in sandstone, with plazas and a central square built around a sacred stone.
The Viaducto La Polvorilla stands at about 4,200 meters above sea level and 63 meters high on the railway line used by the Train to the Clouds, one of the highest heritage railways in the world.
The day ends at the Tuzgle baths, warm mineral springs beneath Cerro Tuzgle, a dormant stratovolcano of around 5,486 meters whose most recent lava flows are dated to about 300,000 years ago. Sources place the volcano itself in Jujuy province, near the border with Salta, so the baths are best described as in the Puna of both provinces' boundary.
