About This Tour
Discover Salta from the comfort of a private vehicle, accompanied by a local guide and driver who stay with you throughout the journey, blending the city's history, colonial architecture, stunning mountain views, and everyday life into one real introduction to Salta. This tour covers Salta's real downtown core — colonial-era buildings, plazas, and viewpoints — with your guide and driver staying with you the whole time to adjust the pace and focus around what you want to see.
Salta's story starts in 1582, when the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Lerma founded the city, intending it as an outpost between Lima and Buenos Aires. The main square, Plaza 9 de Julio, is considered the spot of that founding, and its arcades are still the place to sit and watch the city go by.
Around the plaza stand the colonial-era Cabildo, which houses the Museo Histórico del Norte, and the cathedral, whose current building was begun in 1858 and took about twenty-five years to finish. The nearby Iglesia San Francisco is another landmark you will be pointed toward.
Because the tour is by private vehicle, it can also take in the mountain backdrop beyond the grid of the old center, with a guide and driver who stay with you for the three to four hours.
