The walk centers on Plaza 9 de Julio, considered the place where Hernando de Lerma founded Salta in 1582. The Cabildo on the square dates from the eighteenth century and now houses the Museo Histórico del Norte, and the cathedral's current building was begun in 1858 and took about twenty-five years.
The Güemes monument adds a more personal story. It honors Martín Miguel de Güemes, a key figure in the independence wars, and was inaugurated on February 20, 1931, sculpted by Víctor Garino at the foot of Cerro San Bernardo on the spot where he fell in battle. His remains were transferred to the cathedral's Pantheon of the Glories of the North in 1918.
With a photographer leading the walk, the plaza's arcades, colonial facades and the monument become subjects to frame rather than just stops to tick off.
