The Quebrada de Humahuaca was declared a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in 2003, recognized for roughly 10,000 years of human use and its role as a route in pre-Hispanic, colonial and republican times, tied to the ancient Inca road. The valley runs about 155 kilometers along the Río Grande de Jujuy, and this day trip samples its best-known villages.
Purmamarca lies at the foot of the Cerro de los Siete Colores, the Hill of Seven Colors, with its artisan square. Humahuaca has its Independence Monument and is where lunch is taken. On the way back, a monolith marks the crossing of the Tropic of Capricorn near Huacalera, and the striped Painter's Palette formation is at Maimará.
A note on the name: Iruya is a Salta-province village about 73 kilometers north of Humahuaca on a largely unpaved road over a pass of around 4,000 meters, reachable only through Jujuy. The route described here stays in the main Quebrada, so ask your guide whether an Iruya detour is actually included.
