This loop of the Calchaquí Valleys leaves Salta by the Cuesta del Obispo, a winding, steep stretch of Route 33, and crosses the Piedra del Molino at about 3,348 meters above sea level, the highest point of the route. From there the road enters Los Cardones National Park, created in 1996 over more than 65,000 hectares and named for the cardón cactus, which can live 250 to 300 years and grow up to 12 meters tall.
Beyond Cachi the route follows the historic Route 40 through Molinos, Seclantás and Angastaco, small Calchaquí towns strung along the river, before reaching Cafayate. Torrontés and other high-altitude wines are the morning's focus after the overnight there, and the return runs through the Quebrada de las Conchas.
Note that this tour includes a night in Cafayate, so it is a two-day loop rather than a single day despite its title.
