Park City's Main Street is a mining town that reinvented itself. Silver was discovered in the area in 1868, and the Ontario Mine became one of the richest silver mines of its era. A fire on 19 June 1898 devastated Main Street, with losses estimated above $1 million, yet the rebuilt street survives, and the Main Street Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
As mining declined in the 1960s, the mining companies turned their tunnelled slopes into ski areas, and a small resort opened in late 1963. The area later hosted snowboarding and alpine events at the 2002 Winter Olympics, which is why the drive from Salt Lake feels like moving from a city to a resort town.
On the way, Jordanelle Reservoir offers a modern counterpoint: its dam was completed in April 1993. Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon is often quoted as 607 feet, but topographic data suggests the main falls are closer to 440-480 feet with talus cascades below, so treat the larger figure as a popular rounding.
