Start with the date 1847, when Mormon pioneers entered the valley, and the date 1947, when the This Is the Place Monument was dedicated during the pioneer centennial. The monument was sculpted between 1939 and 1947 by Mahonri Young, a grandson of Brigham Young, and it anchors a heritage park where handcarts and wagons put the journey in scale.
In the city centre, the Salt Lake Tabernacle opened on 6 October 1867. Its roof is a lattice-truss arch held together with wooden dowels and wedges rather than a conventional frame, and the building has long had a reputation as one of the most acoustically remarkable halls in the world.
The tour ends at the Utah State Capitol, a neoclassical building designed by Richard K. A. Kletting and built between 1912 and 1916, with a rotunda rising about 165 feet and decorated with murals from the WPA era. Together the three stops give a compact view of how the city was founded, built and governed.
