The two Cottonwood canyons look alike on a map but have different personalities. Little Cottonwood is the granite canyon: the stone for the Salt Lake Temple was quarried near its mouth, with work beginning in 1860, hauled first by heavy wagons and later by rail after a branch track reached the quarry in 1873. Big Cottonwood runs parallel to its north and is generally greener, with a different mix of lakes and waterfalls.
Driving them as part of one loop shows how closely ski-resort country sits to the city. Resort areas, a waterfall and mountain-lake views are all within a short drive of downtown, and the canyons are a different season each time of year, so what you see depends on when you go.
American Fork Canyon rounds out the day with forested, granite-walled scenery, and your guide-driver can add stops wherever the group wants to linger. Hiking is not a core part of this drive, so wear comfortable shoes for short walks at stops rather than hiking boots.
