The Bonneville Salt Flats are best known for speed. The first outright land speed record set at Bonneville came from Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird in 1935, and the last outright record there was set on 23 October 1970, when Gary Gabelich's rocket-powered Blue Flame peaked at about 622 mph, the first run above 1,000 km/h. Your guide explains how racing teams still use the salt each year.
One detail worth getting right is that the famous 763 mph record, the first supersonic land speed record set by ThrustSSC in 1997, was not set at Bonneville at all; it was set in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. Bonneville's own record belongs to Blue Flame.
On the way out you pass the Tree of Utah, an 87-foot sculpture by Karl Momen dedicated in 1986, standing beside Interstate 80 roughly 25 miles east of Wendover. It is built mostly of concrete with six spheres coated in Utah rocks and minerals. The salt itself is flat, bright and dazzling, so sunglasses are worth packing.
