The Fielding Garr Ranch is the human half of this tour. Fielding Garr built the ranch house in 1848-49 while helping run church-owned cattle on the island, and the house is described as the oldest continually inhabited Anglo-built home in Utah, lived in until the island became a state park in 1981. It is also said to be the oldest Anglo-built house in the state still standing on its original foundation.
The ranch also ties back to the island's wildlife: the island's famous bison herd, started with a dozen animals in 1893, was managed from this very homestead. Walking the grounds gives context for why free-roaming bison, pronghorn and mule deer now share the island with a pioneer-era farmstead.
With one guide who also drives, the pace of the 4-5 hours is yours to set, so the stop at the ranch can be as long as you like before returning to the shoreline and grasslands.
