The University of Salamanca's own history is a little more layered than a single founding date suggests. Its roots trace to a cathedral school already operating in the city by around 1130; King Alfonso IX of León then established it as a formal 'Estudio General' in 1134 and granted it a royal charter in 1218, the date most commonly cited as its official founding. It wasn't until 1254, under Alfonso X, that it was given the formal title of 'University,' with Pope Alexander IV recognizing it the following year. However you date it precisely, it is consistently ranked as the oldest university in Spain still in continuous operation and among the three oldest in the world.
The university's real weight in European intellectual history is hard to overstate — the 16th-century 'School of Salamanca,' led by theologian Francisco de Vitoria, developed some of the earliest frameworks of modern international law, with Vitoria himself publicly challenging the moral legitimacy of Spain's treatment of indigenous peoples in the Americas. The university's historic lecture halls are still standing, including the one where Fray Luis de León reportedly opened his first class back after four years' imprisonment by the Inquisition with the words 'As we were saying yesterday...' — a line still repeated as a symbol of intellectual defiance.
Salamanca's Plaza Mayor, built in the 18th century in golden sandstone Baroque style, is widely considered one of the most beautiful central squares in Spain, and its arcaded perimeter makes a natural anchor point for exploring the rest of the old town on foot.
