About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, by golf cart, through the genuine 80-hectare Villa Borghese gardens. This is a private tour for your group only, by golf cart, through the real, genuine 80-hectare Villa Borghese gardens — a distinct destination from the city-center golf cart tours.

Villa Borghese's 80 hectares make it Rome's third-largest public park, after Villa Doria Pamphili and Villa Ada, and its origin story is distinctly aristocratic rather than civic. Cardinal Scipione Borghese, Pope Paul V's nephew and a major patron of Bernini, began turning a former vineyard into gardens here in 1605, working with architects Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Vasanzio. It stayed private Borghese family property for nearly 300 years before the city of Rome bought it and opened it to the public in 1903.

One of the real stops along the route is the Temple of Aesculapius, standing on its own small artificial island in the park's Garden of the Lake, built between 1785 and 1792 in a deliberate echo of the much older, genuinely ancient temple to the same healing god that once stood on Tiber Island. The temple still holds an ancient statue of Aesculapius, believed to have originally come from the Mausoleum of Augustus.

A golf cart is a genuinely practical way to see grounds this size: 80 hectares is too large to cover thoroughly on foot in a short visit, and it makes for a different kind of Rome tour altogether from a city-center walk, green, quiet, and shaded, with far fewer crowds than the Colosseum or the Vatican only a few kilometers away.
