The Pinacoteca — the Vatican's picture gallery — has its own separate, overlooked history from the rest of the museum complex. Pope Pius VI first assembled a modest collection of about 118 paintings around 1790, but for well over a century afterward those works had no real home of their own, shuffled between rooms in the Apostolic Palaces without a space suited to displaying or preserving them properly. That didn't change until Pope Pius XI commissioned architect Luca Beltrami to build a dedicated gallery, completed in the Vatican's Square Garden specifically for its light and isolation, and inaugurated on October 27, 1932.
Today the Pinacoteca holds roughly 460 paintings across eighteen rooms, spanning works from the 12th century through the 19th — including pieces by Giotto, Raphael, Titian, Veronese, and Caravaggio — yet it's consistently one of the least-visited sections of the Vatican Museums relative to its real holdings, since most standard tours move straight toward the Sistine Chapel. A tour built around skip-the-line entry and the Pinacoteca specifically means real time in galleries that most visitors to the Vatican simply never reach.
