The basilica this tour centers on took 120 years to build. Construction on the current St. Peter's Basilica began on April 18, 1506, after Pope Julius II tore down the ancient 4th-century church that had stood on the site since Constantine's time, and it wasn't finished until 1626. No single architect saw it through: Donato Bramante drew up the original Greek-cross plan, then died in 1514; Raphael and others carried it forward briefly before their own deaths; and it was Michelangelo, taking over in his seventies, who redesigned the dome, crossing, and exterior that still define the skyline today.
Michelangelo never saw his dome completed — he died in 1564, and it was finished by others roughly 20 years later, true to his design. Carlo Maderno later added the long nave and facade that face St. Peter's Square, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini contributed the piazza's colonnades, the bronze Baldacchino over the high altar, and the Cathedra Petri enshrining what's venerated as St. Peter's own chair. An exclusive private visit means covering this entire layered history — plus the Vatican Museums' corridors and the Sistine Chapel — at a pace set only by your own group, not shared with another tour.
