About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, with real before-opening access to the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums. This is a private tour for your group only, with genuine before-opening access — real early-morning timing before the crowds.

Pope Julius II commissioned the Sistine Chapel's ceiling from Michelangelo in 1508 — not as a painting job the artist wanted. Michelangelo considered himself first and foremost a sculptor, and by most accounts believed the commission had been engineered by rivals who expected him to fail at a medium he hadn't mastered. He spent roughly four years, largely working alone on scaffolding of his own design, before the ceiling's complex Genesis scenes — including the Creation of Adam — were unveiled on November 1, 1512, the Feast of All Saints.

The chapel itself is older still: Pope Sixtus IV had it built between about 1477 and 1480, and its walls were already decorated by major Renaissance names — Botticelli, Perugino, and Ghirlandaio among them — more than two decades before Michelangelo ever touched the ceiling above. The Vatican Museums now draw millions of visitors a year, and the Sistine Chapel is deliberately positioned as the very last room on the standard route. Entering before the regular opening hour is one of the only ways to see Michelangelo's ceiling, and the walls beneath it, without that crowd already filling the room.
