Montepulciano's wine has carried the word "Nobile" since at least the late 1700s — the earliest surviving document using it dates to 1766, found in the Jesuit archive of the town and now kept in Florence. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, made mostly from Prugnolo Gentile, the local strain of Sangiovese, was granted DOC status in 1966 and promoted to DOCG in 1980, putting it among the first four Italian wines ever to reach that top tier, alongside Barolo, Barbaresco and Brunello di Montalcino.
The valley the drive runs through, the Val d'Orcia, was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2004 for its cultivated Renaissance landscape of cypress-lined roads and chalky hills. Pienza, one of the day's stops inside that valley, has its own separate and earlier UNESCO listing — its historic center was recognized in 1996 as the first town deliberately built to humanist Renaissance ideals. Pope Pius II, born there as Enea Silvio Piccolomini, had his birthplace rebuilt starting in 1459 by the architect Bernardo Rossellino, creating the trapezoidal Piazza Pio II and renaming the town after himself.
Together the two UNESCO designations — one for the valley's landscape, one for Pienza's planned center — mean this single day covers both a working wine region with centuries of documented history and one of the earliest deliberate pieces of city planning in Europe.
