The Tiber shaped Rome long before it became a scenic backdrop. Ships could travel as far as roughly 100 kilometers upriver in antiquity, carrying grain, stone, and timber into the city, with some evidence pointing to grain shipments on this stretch of water as far back as the 5th century BC. Seeing the historic center from the water, rather than from the streets above it, puts you on the same route that actually built the city, long before any of its famous piazzas existed.
