About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, on the genuine Tiber River, with a real aperitif included as you cruise through central Rome. This is a private tour for your group only. A real aperitif is included as you cruise the genuine Tiber River through the heart of Rome.

This cruise's real centerpiece is a tradition with its own documented history. The aperitivo ritual began with vermouth, invented in Turin in 1786, before Milan's Gaspare Campari perfected his own red bitters recipe in 1860 and turned the pre-dinner drink into a proper evening institution, complete with snacks, which only became standard practice in Milanese bars by the 1980s. Rome's own version of the ritual runs a little more relaxed than Milan's clockwork "aperitivo hour," which suits a slow boat far better than a crowded bar counter.

The real river route passes directly beneath the ramparts of Castel Sant'Angelo, Hadrian's 2nd-century mausoleum turned papal fortress, and close by Tiber Island, the river's only true island, shaped deliberately like a ship by the Romans themselves after a sacred snake supposedly swam ashore here in 293 BC and a temple to Aesculapius, god of healing, went up on the spot where it landed.

Having a drink in hand while the city's bridges and embankments slide past at a walking pace is a genuinely different way to end a day in Rome than a sit-down restaurant. The Tiber has been Rome's working river for roughly 2,500 years, and for a couple of hours it becomes, briefly, a quiet place to relax rather than just water running underneath everything else.
