About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, through the genuine Mercato di Testaccio and Monte Testaccio — a real, distinct neighbourhood from the standard tourist food tours. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include the Mercato di Testaccio, Piazza Testaccio, and Monte Testaccio — a genuinely local, less-touristed food district.
Monte Testaccio, the hill that gives this district its name, is an almost entirely artificial mound built from more than 53 million broken Roman amphorae — nearly 35 meters of compacted pottery shards, most of them from olive-oil jars shipped in from the Spanish province of Baetica. Starting in the 2nd century AD, workers at the nearby Tiber river port stacked the broken vessels in deliberate, layered patterns rather than simply dumping them, and many shards still carry painted inscriptions recording their weight, origin, and the official who had verified each shipment.
That same working-port history gave Rome one of its defining modern street foods: trapizzino, invented right here in Testaccio in 2008 by chef Stefano Callegari at his shop 00100, who stuffed a pocket of pizza dough with slow-cooked classics and named the result by blending tramezzino (sandwich) with pizza.
Mercato di Testaccio itself, along with Piazza Testaccio, remains a genuinely local covered market rather than a food-tour set piece — the kind of neighbourhood district locals actually shop in, a real contrast to the better-known tourist circuits through Trastevere and Campo de' Fiori.
