The Monterozzi necropolis outside Tarquinia holds more than 6,000 tombs, the oldest dating back to the 7th century BC, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 (jointly listed with the necropolis at Cerveteri). What sets it apart from most ancient burial sites is color: roughly 200 of its tombs are painted, carved into soft volcanic rock and decorated with frescoes of banquets, dancers, hunting and fishing scenes, and mythological figures — the largest surviving body of Etruscan pictorial art anywhere. The best-known chambers, including the Tomb of the Leopards and the Tomb of Hunting and Fishing, are singled out as some of the finest examples.
Tuscania's Etruscan Museum, the day's second stop, has its own claim to distinction — it was Italy's first officially recognized Etruscan museum, housed in the former Franciscan convent of Santa Maria del Riposo, with sarcophagi and grave goods pulled from local tombs; the collection was reorganized into the town's archaeological museum in 1941. Nearby, the Romanesque Church of San Pietro traces back to 739 AD and served as Tuscania's cathedral until 1572, standing on a hill ringed by double medieval towers built for defense.
This is a genuinely Etruscan day rather than a Roman one — the Etruscans were a distinct civilization across central Italy that predated Rome's rise, and both stops on this route sit in what was once their heartland.
