About This Tour

Piazza del Campo, Siena's famous shell-shaped square, has hosted organized competition since well before the horse race most visitors know today. The Grand Duke of Tuscany banned bullfighting in 1590, so the city's seventeen contrade (wards) first ran buffalo races and then donkey races in the square before the modern Palio di Siena — ten contrade, bareback jockeys, three breakneck laps around the clay-covered Campo in barely over a minute — took its current form in 1633. It still runs twice a year, on July 2 and August 16.

San Gimignano, the second stop, tells a different medieval story through its skyline. Rival noble families, the Guelph-aligned Ardinghelli and the Ghibelline Salvucci, spent the 11th through 14th centuries building ever-taller stone towers as status symbols, until the town had roughly 72 of them — a local law capped private towers below the height of the communal Torre Grossa so no family could outrank the commune itself. Only 14 towers survive today, but that's still enough to give the town its famous jagged medieval profile, which earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1990.
