About This Tour

Palazzo Barberini rose from 1625 onward at the order of Pope Urban VIII, who had the Barberini family absorb an existing Sforza villa on the Quirinal Hill into a grand new residence. Its design passed through the hands of three of the 17th century's greatest architects in succession: Carlo Maderno began the open-winged layout, and after his death in 1629 the commission went to the young Gian Lorenzo Bernini, with Francesco Borromini staying on to work alongside him. The two left their signatures in the palace's dueling staircases — Bernini's square-shafted stairs on one side, Borromini's oval, helical staircase on the other.

Pietro da Cortona's ceiling fresco in the grand entrance hall, the Triumph of Divine Providence, was finished in 1633 and remains one of Baroque Rome's great illusionist tricks — painted architecture dissolving into an open sky crowded with allegorical figures.

The palace now houses the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, whose holdings include Raphael's La Fornarina, long identified as a portrait of his mistress Margherita Luti, and two works by Caravaggio, Judith Beheading Holofernes and Narcissus, both built around his trademark plunge from brilliant light into total shadow.
