Ostia Antica was founded, by Roman tradition, around 620 BC at the mouth of the Tiber River specifically to harvest sea salt, making it Rome's first colony and, for a long stretch of its history, the city's working port and naval lookout post against invaders arriving by sea. At its height in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD it held a real population of around 60,000 people and functioned as the main gateway through which grain, olive oil, wine, marble, and cloth from across the empire were unloaded, stored, and shipped on to Rome itself.
Unlike Pompeii, which was a resort town for the wealthy, Ostia was fundamentally a working city — its surviving ruins include multi-story apartment buildings, shops, taverns, a public laundry, bath complexes, and even evidence of an organized firefighting service, giving a far more ordinary, day-to-day picture of Roman life than the grander monuments in the city center. The port was gradually abandoned after the river's silt cut it off from the sea and the Western Roman Empire declined, with the site left essentially deserted by the 9th century AD — which is exactly why so much of it survived intact, undisturbed by the centuries of rebuilding that reshaped Rome itself.
