Aqueduct Park (Parco degli Acquedotti) takes its name from the real Roman aqueducts still striding across its fields, chief among them the Aqua Claudia, completed in 52 AD under the emperors Caligula and Claudius. Its arches rise nearly 28 meters in places and once carried an estimated 2,200 liters of water per second into the city — enough on its own to supply every district of ancient Rome. The older Aqua Marcia, built between 144 and 140 BC, runs through the same stretch of parkland, giving Andrea's camera two very different centuries of engineering in a single frame.
The route also follows part of the genuine Appian Way, Rome's oldest major road, begun in 312 BC under the censor Appius Claudius Caecus — built, layer by layer of stone and gravel, to move troops during the Samnite Wars, and still durable enough that stretches of the original paving survive underfoot today. The Appian Way's own catacombs, carved into the soft volcanic rock beside the road, served as underground Christian burial grounds from the early centuries of the faith.
Riding between these sites in a genuine vintage Fiat 500 — Italy's small, round-shouldered icon of mid-century motoring — adds its own layer of photogenic charm to an itinerary built around some of the oldest engineering left standing anywhere in the world.
