Even the Colosseum's own name is a bit of a historical accident. It isn't the amphitheater's original title — ancient Romans called it the Flavian Amphitheatre — but took its now-familiar name centuries later from a colossal statue that once stood nearby: a roughly 130-foot bronze figure of Nero, modeled on the Colossus of Rhodes, that survived him only by having its head swapped for the sun god Sol after his death. The statue itself is long gone, but the nickname stuck.
Historians still disagree on exactly how many people the Colosseum could hold at once, with credible estimates ranging anywhere from about 50,000 up to roughly 87,000 depending on the method used.
