Beneath the Colosseum's arena lies the hypogeum, a two-level network of tunnels and chambers that once ran under the entire footprint of the arena floor — roughly half a hectare of underground infrastructure, with a central corridor flanked by fourteen passages. Historians have documented 28 separate windlass-powered elevators along one of the curved corridors, which hoisted caged animals up to trapdoors in the arena floor; operating all 28 at once reportedly took a coordinated team of 224 people. There were 32 of these trapdoors in total, through which animals — kept in darkness and deliberately deprived of food and water to maximize aggression — were released dramatically into the arena above.
The tour then moves to two sites with their own, older story. Palatine Hill is where Roman legend places the city's founding myth: Romulus and Remus, abandoned as infants, supposedly nursed by a she-wolf before founding Rome there in 753 BC — and centuries later it became so thick with imperial palaces that the word "palace" itself derives from its name. Just below it, the Roman Forum served as the civic heart of the city from around 500 BC onward, the real site of elections, triumphal processions, public trials, and speeches for the length of the Republic and well into the Empire.
