San Clemente is unusual in a way most Roman churches aren't: what you walk into at street level is only the top of three stacked buildings, each from a completely different era. The church visible today dates to the 12th century and is known for a richly detailed Byzantine-style apse mosaic of the crucified Christ set against scrolling acanthus vines. Beneath that lies a second, 4th-century early Christian basilica, rediscovered only in the 1860s when an Irish Dominican priest with an interest in archaeology began excavating below the existing church and found frescoes, inscriptions, and columns still largely intact.
Below that again is the oldest layer of all: Roman construction from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, including the remains of what may have been an imperial mint or a grain market, and a courtyard later converted into a chamber for the mystery cult of Mithras. Pairing this three-layer descent with the Colosseum gives the day a genuinely different shape from a standard Colosseum-only visit — one site built upward and outward across two millennia of continuous use, right alongside one built in a single decade and frozen the moment it was finished.
