A few real numbers tend to grab kids' attention fast: the Colosseum could seat somewhere between about 50,000 and 87,000 people at once — roughly the size of a modern major sports stadium — and the animals used in its games didn't just walk into the arena. They were hidden below the floor in total darkness, in a maze of tunnels called the hypogeum, and hoisted up through one of 32 trapdoors using hand-powered elevators, so they'd burst into view with no warning at all. Even the building's famous name is a kind of accident — it comes from a giant, roughly 130-foot bronze statue that used to stand nearby, not from the building itself.
The tour then crosses to Caesar's Palace on Palatine Hill, where Roman legend says the city's founders, the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, were raised as babies by a she-wolf after being abandoned by the river — the same hill where emperors later built such enormous palaces that our word "palace" actually comes from its name. Down below sits the Roman Forum, which for centuries was ancient Rome's real town square: the place where leaders gave speeches, trials were held, and victory parades marched through, long before anyone had ever built a Colosseum at all.
