About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, with genuine restricted-area arena-floor access at the Colosseum. This is a private tour for your group only, with real restricted-area access to the Colosseum's genuine arena floor — not part of the standard visitor route.

The amphitheater this tour centers on was a political statement as much as a building project. Construction began around 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed by his son Titus in 80 AD, with further modifications added by Titus's brother Domitian over the following years — which is why it was known in its own time as the Flavian Amphitheatre, after the family name of all three emperors. Vespasian deliberately built it on the site of Nero's artificial lake, draining it to hand the land back to ordinary Romans as a public amphitheater, a calculated break from Nero's unpopular private excess. Titus marked its completion with inaugural games that reportedly ran for more than one hundred days.

Access to the arena floor itself — the level where gladiators and performers actually entered — has only recently become available again to visitors after being closed for well over a century, following a dedicated restoration project. Walking in through the real gate performers once used, rather than viewing the arena only from the stands above, is a genuinely different vantage point from the standard Colosseum visit, and one that depends on timed, limited special-access tickets rather than a general admission ticket.
